Margaret was awarded the Woodrow Wilson Fellowship and attended Harvard in 1961, where she earned her master’s degree in English Literature. The Handmaid’s Tale, which Atwood wrote 25 years later, was set on the Harvard campus. 

Margaret’s first book of poetry, The Circle Game, was published when she was at Harvard, which won the 1966 Governor General’s Award.
